On October 15, 1959, she was born at London Welbeck Hospital. Her birth name is Sarah Margaret Ferguson. She is the daughter of parents Major Ronald Ferguson and Susan Wright. Sadly, her parents got divorced in the year 1974. In 1975, Sarah's father and her mother moved into their Dummer, Hampshire home after getting married to polo player Hector Barrantes and moving to Argentina.

Her father married Susan Deptford in the year 1976, and the two went on to have three more children. She enrolled at Hurst Lodge School located in Yateley, England. Ferguson began working at an art gallery at the age of 18 after completing a degree at Queen's Secretarial College. The duo became parents of a daughter Beatrice, born on August 8, 1988. After the birth of their first child, she joined her husband in Australia.
