Japanese–British singer-songwriter, Rina Sawayama is well-known for her musical versatility and has been labeled a "musical chameleon". Also, she rose to popularity for her appearance in the film John Wick: Chapter 4.

Early Life

On 16 August 1990, she was born in Niigata, Japan. However, she lived in Japan until age five. She moved to London with her family and grew up in London. In the UK, Sawayama has an ILR visa, or indefinite permission to remain. However, she is of Japanese ethnic background. When she turned 10, the family's original goal was to move back to Japan, but they finally decided to stay in London. Sawayama had trouble understanding her professors and friends since she couldn't speak English.

She ultimately connected with people through pop music. She joined Magdalene College, Cambridge, and studied politics, psychology, and sociology. Eventually, she earned a degree in political science from the University. Sawayama said that she was enrolled in a May 2020 online course at the University of Oxford. Career 

Rina began uploading music covers to Myspace when she was sixteen and formed the hip-hop group, Lazy Lion. By releasing the Justin "Hoost" Tailor-produced track "Sleeping in Waking" in February 2013, Sawayama launched her solo career. She went under the stage name "Riina" and dropped the track "Terror" on Halloween later that year. In a 2021 Billboard interview, Sawayama admit that the reason she only used her first name was because her last name was "an inconvenience". In June 2015, she released a music video for "Tunnel Vision" that was shot and edited by Arvida Byström. In 2016, she released the song "Where U Are" alongside a music video co-directed by Alessandra Kurr.

Her song "Cyber Stockholm Syndrome" had its debut on The Fader in March 2017. In 2016, she released the song "Where U Are" along with a music video that Alessandra Kurr co-directed. Her debut EP, Rina, as well as the songs "Alterlife" and "Tunnel Vision," a collaboration with Shamir, released in 2017. According to The Guardian, Sawayama has demonstrated that "she can shepherd pop into the future, too" with the EP's "bracing and modern" description. Valentine's Day saw the release of Sawayama's single "Valentine" in 2018. Sawayama released the song "Cherry" in August 2018; it features an exploration of her sexual orientation. Late in 2018, Sawayama set out on her Ordinary Superstar Tour, traveling across the UK, the US, and Canada.

Sawayama released two tracks off her upcoming debut album in 2020 after joining Dirty Hit Records: "STFU!" (a nu-metal, heavy metal, pop, and avant-pop song) and "Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys)," which was described as an "honor to early 2000s dance tracks." "Chosen Family" is a new song by Sawayama from the album. She released a rendition of Lady Gaga's "Dance in the Dark" in June 2020 as a single under Spotify's Singles category. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, on October 26, 2020, Sawayama performed the song "XS" for the first time on television.

As a duet with Elton John, Sawayama released an upgraded version of "Chosen Family" in April 2021. In August 2021, Newsweek Japan listed her as one of the "100 Japanese people respected by the world." The charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist, which will be published in September 2021, has a version of the Metallica song "Enter Sandman" by Sawayama. She contributed to Charli XCX's track "Beg for You," which was released on January 27, 2022.


Acting & Modelling Career

In the fourth film in the John Wick series, Sawayama made her acting debut. In March 2023, the movie was released with positive reviews. The song "An Eye for An Eye" by Sawayama was also made public and can be heard in the movie. For the Versus x Versace ad for fall/winter 2017, she was chosen.

Rina is signed to Anti-Agency & Elite Model Management. She also sang the original song "Play on Me" for MAC x Nicopanda and starred in advertising for Jourdan Dunn's Missguided. In June 2023, Sawayama was on the cover of British Vogue.

She signed an open letter to UK Equalities Minister Liz Truss in July 2020 requesting that all kinds of LGBT+ conversion therapy be outlawed. In a September 2022 interview with Them, Sawayama acknowledged that she has IBS.
