She is the daughter of parents Mae Alice Davis, and Dan Davis, born on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina. On her grandmother's farm, she was born on the Singleton Plantation. Her father Dan, a horse trainer, and mother Mae, a maid, factory worker, and homemaker. When she was just two months old, her family moved to Rhode Island. She has a brother and four sisters, making her the second youngest of six children.
Due to her childhood in Rhode Island's crumbling apartment buildings amid tremendous poverty, Davis had a challenging time. She joined Central Falls High School and fell in love with acting also participated in several extracurricular arts programs and academies.
