Siblings of Viola Davis

She is the daughter of parents Mae Alice Davis, and Dan Davis, born on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina. On her grandmother's farm, she was born on the Singleton Plantation. Her father Dan, a horse trainer, and mother Mae, a maid, factory worker, and homemaker. When she was just two months old, her family moved to Rhode Island. She has a brother and four sisters, making her the second youngest of six children.

Due to her childhood in Rhode Island's crumbling apartment buildings amid tremendous poverty, Davis had a challenging time. She joined Central Falls High School and fell in love with acting also participated in several extracurricular arts programs and academies. Viola studied at Rhode Island College and majored in theater. Then she joined Juilliard School and honed her acting skills over the next four years. Having American nationality, Davis is of Afro-American ethnicity. 


Career

In the year 1996, her first paid acting job after playing a minor role in the film "The Substance of Fire." But when Davis portrayed Tonya in the Broadway production of "King Hedley II," she would really come into her own. Davis won her first Tony Award for the show in 2001, and she quickly followed it up with a second part in the 2004 off-Broadway production of "Intimate Apparel." She also had appearances in movies including "Out of Sight," "Solaris," "Traffic," and "Syriana." She had a few brief parts, including ones in "Ocean's Eleven," "Kate & Leopold," and "Antwone Fisher."She played a significant role in "Far From Heaven," which came out in 2002. Along with that, she landed recurring parts in programs including "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Traveler," and "Century City." Also, Viola made a guest appearance in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." She had a remarkable influence on the 2008 movie "Doubt," earning many accolades while starring in only one scene.

Viola made a comeback to the theater scene in 2010 and took home another Tony Award for her main performance in the play "Fences." Also, she appeared in a major role in the film "It's Kind of a Funny Story." She appeared in "The Help" in 2011, playing a part that was particularly meaningful to her family's history. She collaborated with "The Help" director Tate Taylor in 2014 on the movie "Get On Up." Likewise, Davis played the lead role in the TV series "How to Get Away With Murder." She ultimately became the first woman of color to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series because of her work on the show. She co-starred with Chris Hemsworth in the movie "Blackhat" in 2015.

Viola had the lead role in the 2016 movie version of the play "Fences," for which she eventually received an Academy Award. Then she appeared in "Suicide Squad" and "Custody." She considered receiving her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017 to be a significant achievement. She made her acting debut in the documentary "Two-Sides" in 2018. In 2020, she released a second documentary titled "Giving Voice." Davis returned to the character of Amanda Waller in the blockbuster movie The Suicide Squad in 2021. Davis appeared in the 2022 film The Woman King, which was based on actual events that happened in The Kingdom of Dahomey.

Documents showed that Davis had really paid $1.7 million for the property back in 2005. It's unknown why she sold at such a big loss, but it's likely that she was just eager to finalize the sale and relocate to her far more lavish Toluca Lake home.

However, Viola doesn't have any biological kids. But she is the mother of three kids two children from her spouse Julius' previous marriage. She along with her spouse adopted, a daughter Genesis in the year 2011.
