Early Life
In December 1960, Michael Holmes was born in Perth, Australia. He is the son of parents Jim Home (father) and mother Shirley Holmes. Having Australian nationality, Homes is of English ethnicity.
He joined Wesley College, Perth High School from 1973 to 1977. Eventually, they earned a bachelor's degree in journalism.
Career
At the age of 17, he began his career as a cub reporter with the Daily News, an afternoon newspaper in Perth. Holmes started his television career in 1982 with the Nine Network in Perth after working in newspapers for nearly five years. Also, he has served several British media outlets, including WTN, The Observer newspaper, and TV-AM. As the network's European current affairs reporter for four years, he was headquartered in London and covered events including the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the first Palestinian intifada, Northern Ireland, and the commencement of the first Gulf War. He won the Australian Television Society Award for Coverage of a Current Affairs Story in 1990 for his coverage of the miners' rebellion in Bucharest. One of the few Australian reporters to cover the 1994 Rwandan genocide firsthand was Holmes, who worked for Australia's Nine Network before joining CNNI.

He has acted as host and moderator at several CNN special events, including Future Summit and Principal Voices, and has interviewed the prime ministers and presidents of many different countries. He has also anchored innumerable live events and breaking news items from all around the world. He was one of the few reporters in Ramallah during the Israeli invasion in April 2002, and despite Israeli gunfire, he managed to gain an exclusive interview with Yasser Arafat inside his besieged headquarters during a very risky time in the West Bank. Holmes has many firsthand accounts from the area, including witnessing brutality on both sides of that war. Additionally, he has frequently reported from Afghanistan, spending weeks there alongside American and Afghan forces. A behind-the-scenes look at Holmes' reporting in Iraq during one of the deadliest months since the war's beginning in 2003 was made public in CNN's award-winning documentary 'On Assignment: Month of Mayhem' in 2007.

Holmes has spent nearly a dozen trips there, some for weeks at a time, covering the conflict in Iraq since its inception. He has covered every facet of the conflict, from Saddam Hussein's trial and execution through the occupation and insurgency. He escaped a two-vehicle CNN convoy assault in January 2004 that claimed the lives of two employees and injured one. He has devoted a large portion of his career to reporting from conflict zones throughout the globe, including Libya, where he spent several weeks with rebels there as they pushed from the country's western highlands and covered the occasionally severe combat in several towns and cities. Holmes, who joined CNNI in 1996 as the network's first Australian anchor, has a wealth of international reporting experience from places including Asia, Europe, the Middle East, India, Nepal, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. He has been a journalist for more than three decades.
