On 12 December 1949, William Francis Nighy was born in Caterham, Surrey. He is the son of parents of Catherine Josephine Nighy and Alfred Martin Nighy. Bill's mother Catherine, a psychiatric nurse of Irish descent born in Glasgow, Scotland, and father Alfred, managed a car garage after working in the family chimney sweeping business. He grew up as a Roman Catholic and served as an altar boy. As a teenager, he gave up "being a practicing Catholic". Also, Nighy has two elder siblings Martin and Anna. From 1978 to 1982, he starred in three episodes of the British anthology series Play For Today. He gained considerable notoriety among American viewers because of his praised depiction of the older rock musician Ray Simms in the 1998 movie Still Crazy.
