Parents of Bill Nighy

On 12 December 1949, William Francis Nighy was born in Caterham, Surrey. He is the son of parents of Catherine Josephine Nighy and Alfred Martin Nighy. Bill's mother Catherine, a psychiatric nurse of Irish descent born in Glasgow, Scotland, and father Alfred, managed a car garage after working in the family chimney sweeping business. He grew up as a Roman Catholic and served as an altar boy. As a teenager, he gave up "being a practicing Catholic". Also, Nighy has two elder siblings Martin and Anna. Having British nationality, Bill is of English ethnicity. 

He joined the John Fisher School, a Roman Catholic grammar school in Purley. He earned the nickname "Knucks" for his hands. Bill fled home twice during his teenage years. He earned two O-levels before quitting school and went to work as a courier for The Croydon Advertiser. After being turned down for a spot at RADA, he decided to pursue theatrical acting training at the Guildford School of Acting.


Career

He had worked in many regional theaters shows in his early twenties at venues including the Cambridge Arts Theatre and Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre. With his performances in David Hare's Pravda in 1985, William Shakespeare's King Lear in 1986, and Anton Chekov's The Seagull in 1994, he progressively rose to fame after making his acting debut. In the year 1991, he played the role of He played Jerry in Harold Pinter's Betrayal at the Almeida Theatre. From 1978 to 1982, he starred in three episodes of the British anthology series Play For Today. He gained considerable notoriety among American viewers because of his praised depiction of the older rock musician Ray Simms in the 1998 movie Still Crazy.

With the starring role in "The Photographer," an episode of the acclaimed BBC-TV mockumentary comedy series People Like Us, he furthered his notoriety in the UK. He played Will Rushmore, a middle-aged man who had given up his job and family in the hope of becoming a successful commercial photographer. His breakthrough performance came in the 2003 film Love Actually, for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He quickly became well-known for his roles as Viktor in the Underworld film series (2003–2009) and Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series (2006–2007).
