At the 13th Air Force Regional Medical Center at Clark Air Base in Angeles City, the Philippines, Vanessa Joy Minnillo was born on November 9, 1980. She is the daughter of parents Vince Minnillo and Helen Bercero. Her father Vince worked in the Air Force and mother Bercero is from Manila, Philippines. She along with her moved frequently because of her dad's service in the Air Force. Lachey has lived in Washington, California, Nevada, Florida, Germany, and Japan. Also, she attended eight schools in nine years. 

Having American nationality, Vanessa is of Italian and Irish ethnicity. Likewise, she has adopted a sibling brother Vincent Jr, two years older than her. In the year 1983, her parents separated and got divorced in 1986. When she was 9 years old, her mother Helen left the family. She started competing in beauty pageants and eventually became Miss South Carolina Teen USA before being crowned Miss Teen USA in 1998. Later she began to work as a host on MTV's The Morning After (2003) and Total Request Live (2003–2007). In the year 2005, she became a New York City correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. She served as the host of True Beauty on ABC from 2009 until 2011. In December 2011, she became a co-host of ABC's game show Wipeout. Also, Vanessa guest-starred on several TV shows, such as "City Guys" in 2001, "CSI: NY" in 2009, "Hawaii Five-0" in 2011, "American Housewife" in 2019, Rock, The Bold and the Beautiful, Psych, and Maybe It's Me. She played the role of Ashlee in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, in the episode "No Tomorrow" in 2018.

The couple became parents of three kids, two sons, and a daughter; they are daughter Brooklyn (born January 5, 2015) and sons Camden (born September 12, 2012) and Phoenix (born December 24, 2016).
