Parents of Javier Bardem 

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, he was born on March 1, 1969. He is the son of parents Pilar Bardem (1939–2021) and father Jose Carlos Encinas Doussinague (1931–1995). His mother, Pilar an actress, and father Jose, son of a cattle rancher. Javier's dad Jose was a violent and unpredictable man and constantly getting the family evicted. His parents divorced, shortly after he was born. His mother Pilar raised him and his elder siblings Carlos and Monica.

Both of his elder siblings also pursued an acting career. In the year 1995, Javier's father Jose died of leukemia. Having Spanish nationality, Bardem is of Hispanic ethnicity. He spent time at theatres & on film sets as a child. He didn't see himself going into the family business though he grew up in a family full of actors. Javier had an interest in painting. He enrolled to study painting for four years at Madrid's Escuela de Artes y oficios. He pursued acting jobs because he needed the money to finance his painting, but because he thought he was a poor painter, he finally gave up painting as a vocation.


Javier made his first appearance on screen at the age of 6, in an episode of the Spanish television series "El Picaro." At the age of 21, he came to notice in a small role in his first major motion picture, The Ages of Lulu along with his mother, Pilar Bardem. After appearing in roughly two dozen films in his own country, he shot to fame when he played Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in Julian Schnabel's Before Night Falls in 2000. He starred in Malkovich's directorial debut, The Dancer Upstairs in 2002. In the year 200, he won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his role in Mar Adentro, released in the United States as The Sea Inside. In a brief cameo in the crime film Collateral, he made his Hollywood debut as a mob boss who hires Tom Cruise's hitman to undertake the dirty work of eliminating witnesses.

In 2007, Bardem appeared in two movie adaptations: the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men, and Gabriel Garca Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, with Giovanna Mezzogiorno. Bardem became the first Spaniard to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, fro the role of a sociopathic assassin, Anton Chigurh in the film No Country for Old Men. For his performance in Biutiful, he was awarded Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010. For his performances in movies like Jamón jamón (1992), Boca a boca (1995), Carne trémula (1997), Los lunes al sun (2002), and Mar adentro (2004), he won praise from critics.
