Steve Lacy is the son of parents Filipino father, Harry Lackritz, and an Afro-American mother, Sophia Lackritz. His birth date is May 23, 1998, and his birthplace is Compton, California. Career

At the age of seven, Lacy first gained an interest in the guitar through the video game Guitar Hero. Soon after, he wanted to learn how to play an actual guitar. While in the jazz band in high school, he met Jameel Bruner, his future bandmate on the Internet. He used an iRig guitar plug-in to create and play his first compositions on his iPhone. Steve started a producing role on what would become the Internet's third studio album, Ego Death in the year 2013. Ego Death was a nominee for Best Urban Contemporary CD at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, contributing to the creation of eight songs. After it was revealed that the members of The Internet would be releasing individual albums, Lacy featured on Matt Martians' album The Drum Chord Theory and Syd's record Fin.

Also, he started producing songs for Twenty88, Denzel Curry, Isaiah Rashad, J. Cole, GoldLink, and Kendrick Lamar, most notably producing the song "Pride" from Lamar's Grammy-winning album Damn. Likewise, he made two guest appearances on the Vampire Weekend album Father of the Bride. On February 17, 2017, he released an album Demo creating most of the songs on his iPhone by producing the guitar and bass arrangements through it and singing his vocals directly into its built-in microphone. Also, he programmed the drum patterns in Ableton Live. Likewise, Steve co-wrote and produced Ravyn Lenae's EP Crush, which was eventually released in February 2018. In July 2018, he reunited with the Internet to work on their album Hive Mind. Later, Lacy worked as a producer for Solange, Kali Uchis' breakthrough album Isolation, Mac Miller's Swimming, and Dev Hynes' Negro Swan.

In 2018, Lacy claimed he had worked with rapper YG as a producer and had started using equipment other than his phone. In March 2019, Steve credited for producing two tracks on Solange's album When I Get Home. Also, he featured on the Vampire Weekend song "Sunflower" and appeared in its video. Lacy released the single "N Side" from his debut album Apollo XXI and announced the release date of Apollo XXI to be on May 24, 2019. Also, he released two more singles, "Playground" and "Hate CD". The record received Lacy's first Grammy nomination as a single performer for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

He released a compilation album of his early work titled The Lo-Fis on December 4, 2020. On June 16, 2022, his single "Mercury" was released with a music video. Lacy's second studio album, Gemini Rights, got released on July 15, 2022. On Saturday Night Live, he performed "Bad Habit" and "Helmet" on November 5, 2022. AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) Presents revealed on January 31, 2023, that Lacy would be one of three headliners at the first Re:SET Music Series.
