During his time at Troy State, he played tight end before attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned a varsity letter when he played on the first NCAA-sanctioned Division III UAB Blazers team. He transferred to Auburn, then started working as a graduate assistant at Auburn, and he became a scout.
