On 30 November 2012, he was officially released from his NXT contract by the WWE after being charged with the battery of a law enforcement officer and disorderly intoxication in St. Petersburg, Florida. Thom started competing on the independent circuit after his release from his NXT contract by the WWE. He made his debut for World Xtreme Wrestling but lost the match to CJ Doyle. He had a TNA tryout before One Night Only: X-Travaganza II on 11 April 2014.
