Early Life of Rick Astley

On 6 February 1966, Astley was born in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire. He is the fourth child of his family. At the age of five, his parents divorced. Rick was brought up by his father Horace Astley. His mother Cynthia Astley lived a few blocks away from his father, but Rick maintained very close contact with her. Having British nationality, Rick is of English ethnicity.

He distanced himself from his father after finding out he had kicked his mother out of the house. Astley started singing in a church choir when he was 10 years old, which led to his love of music. He formed and played the drums in a number of local bands during his school days, where he met guitarist David Morris. He worked as a driver for his father's market-gardening company during the day after leaving school at sixteen.

After leaving school, Astley began playing the drums for the soul band FBI. After achieving worldwide fame in the 1980s with songs like "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Together Forever", and "Whenever You Need Somebody", Rick Astley returned to music full-time in the 2000s after a 6-year hiatus. He has occasionally worked as a radio DJ and a podcaster outside his music career. In 1987, he became famous through his work with Stock Aitken Waterman, releasing the album Whenever You Need Somebody, which sold 15.2 million copies worldwide. He won the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Single for his debut single "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Astley's 1988 single "Together Forever" became his second single to top the US Billboard Hot 100. Likewise, he was one of his eight songs to reach the top ten on the UK Singles Chart. He followed up his debut album with Hold Me In Your Arms in the year 1988. He left Stock Aitken Waterman in 1991 and shifted his focus from dance-pop to soul, which he explored on his albums Free (1991) and Body and Soul (1993). He retired from music to focus on spending time with his then-partner and raising their daughter in the year 1993. In the year 2000, he returned to the music industry and released the single "Sleeping" and the album Keep It Turned On in 2001. He released his cover album Portrait four years later.

In 2007, Astley became an Internet sensation when his song "Never Gonna Give You Up" was included in the Rickrolling meme. His performance career was relaunched as a result. He released the single "Lights Out" after touring with Peter Kay in 2010. In 2018, he released a studio album called Beautiful Life and in 2019 he released a greatest hits album called The Best of Me. Astley sold about 40 million records worldwide by the time he announced his retirement. In 2008, the MTV Europe Music Awards voted Rickrolling "Best Act Ever" by the Internet users. The video for his song "Never Gonna Give You Up" received 1 billion views in July 2021, becoming the fourth 1980s song to reach this milestone (following M. Jackson's "Billie Jean", A-ha's "Take On Me", and Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine").
