On 7 April 1987, Jerrod Carmichael was born into a poor family. He grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he was born. His full name is Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael with birth sign Aries. Jerrod is the son of parents Joe Carmichael (father) and mother Cynthia Carmichael.

Having American nationality, Jerrod is of African-American ethnicity. Likewise, he has an elder sibling brother Joe Carmichael. He grew up poor, which is a frequent topic in his stand-up comedy. At age 20, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a stand-up comedian, despite never having tried it before. The Comedy Store in West Hollywood was the first place he performed stand-up. He appeared in the "New Faces" showcase at the 2011 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal after working his way up through the clubs. In 2014, he had a breakthrough role in the movie Neighbors, having made his television debut on The Goodwin Games (2013). In 2014, he shot his first stand-up comedy special for HBO, Love at the Store, directed by filmmaker Spike Lee.

Following the debut of The Carmichael Show, Carmichael co-created, co-wrote, produced, and starred in a semi-biographical NBC sitcom that was well-received and noted for its nifty way of approaching topics such as Black Lives Matter, LGBT issues, gun rights, politics, and the reality of being black in America. Also, he worked as an executive producer for the Fox sitcom Rel (2018–2019) and garnered praise for its unusual style. In 2019, he made an appearance on Tyler, The Creator's fifth album IGOR.

Jerrod was hired by Quentin Tarantino to co-write a film adaptation based on the Django/Zorro crossover comic book series. In the year 2019, he created, directed, produced, and starred in the HBO documentaries Home Videos and Sermon on the Mount, both of which are autobiographical. Jerrod directed and starred in the comedy thriller film On the Count of Three in 2021. He hosted Saturday Night Live and his third HBO special, Rothaniel in 2022.
