Despite being named All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and earning All-State honors at Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morgan was only lightly recruited by Division I programs and unranked by recruiting services. As a freshman, however, he earned first-team all-conference honors in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) at Murray State University.

He won the OVC Player of the Year as well as led the NCAA in assists during his sophomore season. Additionally, Morant became the first player to average more than 20 points and 10 assists per game during his sophomore campaign. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2020 after being selected with the second overall pick by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA draft.
