During high school, he won city basketball championships in all four years and New York State’s all-time leading scorer in high school basketball. Lance joined Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in 2005 and played for the school’s team. In 2008, he tried out for the United States national team’s under-18 team but was cut because of chemistry reasons. In the year 2010, he was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 40th pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

In February 2011, he made his NBA debut for the Pacers in a game against the Phoenix Suns. Liara left the club for Charlotte Hornets in the year 2014. In the 2015-16 season, he spent a season with the club and moved to Los Angeles Clippers. He signed a contract with the New Orleans Pelicans in September 2016.
