As a student, Long played at Penn State and then transferred to North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she continued her success. Prior to being called up to the US women's national soccer team in 2010, she played on the US U-20 and U-23 national teams. At the 2016 Olympics, Long played in three out of four matches and was named Player of the Match. Alexandra has scored six goals over 45 appearances with the US side.
