Tonya Harding is an American former figure skater who is a two-time Skate America Champion. Also, she is a two-time Olympian, a retired boxer, and a reality television personality.

Early Life of Tonya Harding

In Portland Oregon, Tonya Harding was born on November 12, 1970. Her mother LaVona Fay Goldenworked as a waitress. Her father Al Harding aka Albert held several jobs, such as apartment manager and truck driver. He passed away in the year 2009. Having American nationality, Tonya is of white ethnicity.

She began skating at the age of 3 years old and trained with coach Diane Rawlinson. Her family couldn't afford to buy skating outfits. Her parents divorced when she was 16. She left Milwaukie High School to pursue her skating career full-time during her sophomore year. 


Tonya Harding's Physical and Psychological Abuse

In the year 1988, she earned her GED. Tonya alleged that she suffered physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her mother mentioned in her biography. In her biography "The Tonya Tapes" a 2008 authorized biography, stated that Tonya was raped by an acquaintance in 1991. Also, she was molested by her half-brother, Chris Davison, during her childhood.


Skating Career

Tonya came in 6th place at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in the year 1986. Then she was placed 5th following years and third in the year 1989. Tonya started training with coach Dody Teachman after the 1989 Nationals Championship. She won that year's Skate America competition. Despite being in second place at one point during the 1990 US Figure Skating Championships, Harding finished seventh as asthma and the flu affected her performance.

Tonya became the first American woman to execute a triple Axel while competing in the 1991 US Championships. Also, she won the US Ladies Singles title and finished second in the World Championships the following year. She came in third in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in the year 1992. In the following year, she became fourth in the Winter Olympics, sixth in the World Championships, and fourth in the Skate Canada International event.

Despite winning the 1994 US Championships, Harding lost her title after the Nancy Kerrigan scandal. While she was banned from figure skating after the 1994 Winter Olympics, she was permitted to compete in the 1999 ESPN Pro Skating Championship and placed second.
 

Boxing Career

Harding appeared on Fox's "Celebrity Boxing," where she beat Paula Jones. in the year 2002. In February 2003, her first professional boxing match took place, and lost to Samantha Browning. After that, she competed in a celebrity boxing match on Comedy Central's "The Man Show," winning the match against comedian Doug Stanhope.

Reportedly, she canceled an Oakland, California, boxing match due to death threats against her in March 2004. In June 2004, her last match was with Amy Johnson and lost the match after being booed when she entered the boxing ring. Tonya decided to give up boxing because of her asthma.


Harding Television Personality

Tonya life has been the subject of many books, films, documentaries, and academic studies. Steven Rogers wrote the screenplay for I, Tonya in 2017, in which Australian actress Margot Robbie portrayed Harding.

Harding was the subject of two television documentaries in 2014 (Nancy & Tonya and The Price of Gold). She finished third on season 26 of Dancing with the Stars in 2018. In the year 2019, she won the 16th season of Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition.

Tonya and Jeff's relationship couldn't work, they eventually got divorced in August 1993. After their divorce, her ex-husband Jeff continued to manage Tonya's skating career.

Harding and Gillooly reconciled and started living in a rented Beavercreek chalet together until January 1994. Then, she started dating her 2nd husband Michael Smith. Tonya tied the wedding knot with Smith in the year 1995. Sadly, the duo's married life ended just after one year of their marriage in 1996.

Tonya is still happily married to her third husband Joseph Jens Price. With her husband Joseph, Harding shared a son Gordon Price. Her son Gordon was born on February 19, 2011.
