Virginia shared 2 kids with her husband John. Her 2 kids (both sons) are Joseph Madden and Michael Madden. Her son Joseph played football at Brown University. Michael started as a receiver on the football team. The married couple with their family lived in Pleasanton, California. Also, they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary two days before his death.

Virginia Fields' husband John's cause of death remains undisclosed. On December 28, 2021, Madden died at his home in Pleasanton, California. At the age of 85, he passed away. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a press release announcing Madden's death said  Madden "was football".

Then he said 
"there will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today."

He holds the highest winning percentage among NFL head coaches who coached 100 games never having a losing season.

John was a color commentator for NFL telecasts from 1979 to 2008, which earned him 16 Sports Emmy Awards after retiring from coaching. Also, Madden lent his name, expertise, and commentary to the Madden NFL video game series (1988 to 2021) and became the best-selling football video game franchise of all time.
