  1. His full name is Mark Andrew Spitz who was born on February 10, 1950, who became a nine-time Olympic champion. 
  2. Mark rained with Haines at SCSC and Santa Clara High School from the year 1964 to 1968. 
  3. He held national high school records in every stroke and in every distance during his four years there. 
  4. Mark won the 100-meter butterfly at the AAU national championships at the age of 16 and his 24 total AAU titles. 
  5. Then he emerged on the world swimming stage when he set his first world record at a small California meet with a time of 4:10.60 in the 400-meter in the following years. 
  6. At the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, he won 7 gold medals, all in world record time. 
  7. His achievement that lasted for 36 years was surpassed by fellow American Michael Phelps who won eight golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
  8. Mark won nine Olympic golds, a silver, and a bronze, in addition to five Pan American golds, 31 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) titles and eight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles between the years 1968 to 1972.
